Using budget car rentals could be the way to enjoy an independent vacation without the hassle of costly taxi rides and the time wasted waiting for them to collect you. The one thing you don’t want though is to be lumbered with a car that sounds like your lawnmower. Perhaps a slight exaggeration on my part but when renting a budget car you do have to be careful. That said; here are a few ideas you can use when looking to rent a budget car.
If the type of car you want to drive is of no real concern to you, use a car rental web site that allows you to dictate your own price level. Often the site will not only get you the best deal but may even throw in an unlimited mileage just to get the deal. If you are lucky and decide to book a fly-drive deal for instance, then you may find the rental company has upgraded your vehicle but this is less likely if you book with the airline themselves. Unfortunately, airlines although convenient aren’t really the more economic way to go, their budget car rental prices are hardly budget, and tend to be higher than those of outside firms.
There are some excellent budget car rental deals on the internet that can give you a great bargain. Internet only bookings are fast becoming the only way you are able to receive a discount on your car rental. Shopping around on the internet can be fun and save you money as there is almost always a special car rental offer available with one budget car rental company or another. Plus, and this is the good bit; all this can be done from your home.
Another thing to try is whether your credit card company has negotiated special discounts with the car rental company you are going to use. Many car rental companies have arranged special deals with large organizations to ensure they have more business, perhaps you are a member of one of these.
The only problem you may find is that a budget rental car may not have been looked after with the same care as a more reputable company and there may some damage which you do not want to be liable for. In addition, try to check out all the accessories, wipers, radio, brakes, seatbelts etc, to familiarize yourself with them, and also to check if they work, like the previous tip, you might be charged for this if you don’t inform them.
Now we pass the subject of insurance, sometimes your own car insurance covers car rentals, so have a look see before you buy insurance from the rental firm. Saving money is the game so why pay for auto insurance you don’t need when renting your car. Always make sure you have auto insurance as the penalties for driving without adequate cover are severe.
Another money saving tip is to pick up your car early in the morning, make it so that the firm is just opening, this is because at this time most of the budget car rentals haven’t been returned yet, and you may get an upgrade for a lower price.
