Getting a dog from an American Bulldog rescue is a really good idea. Although unless you prepare yourself for what you are getting into it can be quite a shock. In the first few weeks after you bring home your American Bulldog you need to be prepared for some rough times that can also last for awhile. Always keep in mind that you are dealing with a dog that has been through difficult times and events that have placed a lasting effect on the dog.
Also by the time many dogs are rescued they are usually adults and can be highly disturbed which makes the situation a lot more difficult. Just remember that you and the Bulldog may not get along right away. The Bulldog is very stubborn and dominant by their nature so they won’t ready respond to what you say. If the dog has had very bad experiences and training in the past then you could end up with a Bulldog that is very badly trained and will take awhile before they will work with you for training purposes.
It can be very challenging to try and train or housebreak an adult Bulldog from an American Bulldog rescue. Sometimes you may even feel like your Bulldog rescue is a completely hopeless case. Although it is important that you never give up on your adopted Bulldog, just remember what the dog has likely been through.
By considering this you can understand why they are reacting the way they are. Also by considering the conditions the dog came from it can give you insight into better techniques to use that may have a better impact on the dog than standard training methods.
Also remember that you are giving the dog a second chance at life, if you give up on them then they will have to go to another home. And if another home is not available then it is likely that the dog will spend the rest of their life in a dog pound or kennel. Keeping these facts in mind can keep you motivated and striving to train your American Bulldog rescue.
Eventually your American Bulldog rescue will come to trust you, especially after they realize that you are the only remaining hope in their life. As a result they will start to love you just as much as you love them. This can also be considered one of the main benefits you have by adopting an American Bulldog rescue. Once the dog realizes that they have been adopted into a house with an owner that is going to take proper care of them then they will be forever grateful and loyal to you.
However, you also should know when to ask for help. If your American Bulldog rescue is truly too difficult to train then consider enrolling them in some dog training classes to get assistance. If the dog is truly difficult it is always best to leave the training up to the professional individual.
American Bulldog rescue comes with both advantages and disadvantages, however they are about even so you need to rely on your own instincts when it comes to choosing to adopt an American Bulldog rescue.
