Commercial dog food - so many varieties to choose from and really no idea what I am buying. Does that sound familiar. Dog food labelling has got to be one of the most confusing things I have ever come accross.
The difficulty is just how many varieties there are on the shelves. I mean where do you begin. Well I try with the labels but most of it doesnt make sense, or is so small I can’t read it. As usual I would leave with my dog food and a nagging doubt that I did not know what was in the food she was eating.
It will shock you to realise that the majority of dog owners do not realise what their dog is eating. As consumers we have been brainwashed by the pet-food industry to believe all their marketing claims. Your dogs food may seem like the perfect, balanced solution but unfortunately this is not the case.
Here are a few points to remember the next time you need to buy your dog food.
The ingredients used in dog food comes from a variety of sources and contains additives, colourings, and preservatives.
Your dogs food will often be contaminated with a wide variety of toxic substances. Some of these will be destroyed by processing, however, some will not. Drugs used to “put down” sick animals are known to still be present in dog food after the manufacturing process
Many pet foods state that they contain “human grade” ingredients. This really is not the case.
A number of diseases in dogs have been linked to commercial pet foods and pet food ingredients.
The next time you go shopping for your dog food remember the petfood industry is a highly sophisticated advertising machine ($25 billion a year in profit worldwide) It is crucial that you can tell the difference between advertising hype and what is relevant so you can make an informed decision regarding your dogs diet.
I have owned dogs for many years and for most of this time was completely ignorant to what was in the “premium” brand dog foods. It was only after my “newfie” died and her death was linked to her diet that I really began to research what actually goes into commercial dog food.
