Decorating a bathroom that is used by a child presents its own unique challenges. Because young children use the bathroom so often (many times accompanied by a parent), these bathrooms are often the most used rooms in a house. Unfortunately, most parents have no idea how to decorate kids’ bathrooms. Children can be vocal about things they dislike, so parents of young kids sometimes find that their design choices are less-than-welcome. This article offer some tips and ideas that parents can use to decorate a kid’s bathroom.

Boy or Girl? It Can Make a Difference When You Decorate

A boy’s bathroom can be decorated to appeal to his interest in specific passions such as cars, cowboys, bugs, etc. A bathroom used by a young girl can be decorated to appeal to other passions that a boy may not be interested in such as dolls or princesses. Decorating a bathroom begins with the gender of the child (or children) who will use the bathroom. If both a girl and a boy are going to use the same bathroom, it’s important to keep a neutral theme in the bathroom while catering to their interests simultaneously. For every need or theme, there are plenty of accessories that you can use.

Accessories and Decorations to Use

There are dozens of accessories that you can use to decorate a kid’s bathroom. For example, if your child enjoys cars, you can buy a bathmat and curtain set that have cars on them. Similarly, if your child likes Disney cartoons, you can use a bathroom rug that has pictures of their favorite cartoon characters.

Toothbrush tumblers come in hundreds of styles. Boys may enjoy a tumbler shaped like a dinosaur while girls may prefer tumblers that have a shape like a princess. Hand soap and lotion pumps that liven up kids’ bathrooms with their favorite animals, sports objects, or cartoon characters are also available.

Doorknobs, wastebaskets, soap dishes and tissue dispensers can be found which will cater to the interests of any child. For instance, you can replace the knobs on any cabinets or drawers in your child’s bathroom to ones which will appeal to them. Clowns, animals, cars - really anything which interests your child can be readily adopted as a bathroom dcor.

As Your Child Changes, so Does the Bathroom

As your child gets older, of course the bathroom is not going to be appropriate if it’s decorated in a Mickey Mouse theme, for example. As your child’s interests change, the bathroom theme must also change. Shower curtains, bathmats, soap dispensers and tumblers can all be replaced to reflect these changes.

If possible, avoid using decorations in your kid’s bathroom that might be difficult or impossible to change. For example, wallpaper with images of Cinderella on it may be very age-appropriate when a girl is three, but will be entirely inappropriate during adolescence, which means that the wallpaper will need to be replaced.

Decorating a bathroom for your child is limited only by your own imagination - there are so many options open to you that the hardest part will be choosing which to go with. The way to put together a bathroom your child will love is to know what they are interested in and buy decorations and accessories which meet those interests. Just make sure that they are decorations which will be easy to replace as your child outgrows their interests. A little planning will long way towards designing a bathroom perfect for your child, no matter what they are into this year.
